Commas & Sentence Boundaries

Commas separate items in a list, set off nonessential (non-restrictive) clauses, and follow introductory phrases — but should never separate a subject from its verb, or create a comma splice joining two independent clauses. Always read the full sentence (not just the underlined portion) to check whether a clause is a complete sentence on its own.
