Unit 2: Dynamics

Friction & Inclined Planes

Friction opposes relative motion (or impending motion) and is proportional to the normal force; inclined plane problems require rotating your coordinate axes along the slope.

Overview

Static friction (up to μₛN) prevents motion from starting; kinetic friction (μₖN) opposes motion already happening, and μₖ < μₛ generally. On an incline, gravity splits into a component along the slope (mg·sinθ) and a component into the slope (mg·cosθ, which sets the normal force).
