Conservation of Mechanical Energy
In the absence of non-conservative forces like friction, total mechanical energy (kinetic + potential) stays constant throughout a system's motion.
Overview
KE_i + PE_i = KE_f + PE_f when only conservative forces (gravity, springs) do work. If friction or air resistance is present, some mechanical energy converts to heat, and KE_i + PE_i = KE_f + PE_f + (energy lost to friction).
