Moment of Inertia & Angular Momentum

Moment of inertia is the rotational analog of mass — it depends on both mass and how that mass is distributed relative to the axis of rotation.

Overview

A mass farther from the rotation axis contributes more to moment of inertia (I) than the same mass closer in — this is why a figure skater spins faster when pulling their arms in (reducing I, conserving angular momentum L=Iω).
