The Ottoman, Safavid, and Mughal empires are often grouped as 'gunpowder empires' for their shared use of gunpowder weaponry to expand and consolidate control.
Overview
Despite religious differences (Ottoman and Mughal mostly Sunni-influenced administration, Safavid explicitly Shia), all three used cannons and firearms to centralize power and expand territory — a clear comparative pattern the AP exam frequently tests.
