← Unit 6: Consequences of Industrialization (c. 1750–1900)
Industrialization & New Imperialism
Industrialization created demand for raw materials and new markets, fueling a wave of 'New Imperialism' as industrialized nations colonized much of Africa and Asia in the late 1800s.
Overview
Industrialized European powers sought raw materials (rubber, cotton, minerals) and captive markets for finished goods, using technological advantages (steamships, machine guns, quinine against malaria) to colonize much of Africa (the 'Scramble for Africa') and parts of Asia.
